Happy Australia Day

Het was geen Koninginnedag, maar die Aussies kunnen wel een feest maken. Het gaat om drie dingen: strand, bier en BBQ natuurlijk. Het was ontzettend warm, zeker boven de derig graden en vochtig. We zijn begonnen bij de Harbour Bridge voor de ferry race. Daarna heel eventjes bakken op het strand in Manly en dan bbq in de tuin van vrienden. Veel mensen waren versierd, maar Nederlanders kunnen Australiers nog wel wat leren!

Cinema on Water & Sydney by Air

The Open Air Cinema is in town, playing a festival of films on a giant screen erected in front of a viewing area built on the hillside of the botanical gardens. A massive 350 square meter screen built in the water shows normal box-office movies with postcard views of Sydney Harbour in the background. The show tickets for last Friday had been sold out for weeks, but a few are released on the night of the show. A couple of us went down early, braving the crowds to get some of the last few tickets available. We saw Life As We Know It with the sounds of the waves in the background and the beetles chirping away in the trees.  

On Sunday it was finally clear skies for Jeroen's scenic flight around Sydney. We were picked up and taken to the Bankstown airport to take a trip around the Sydney area, the coast and the Blue Mountains. After some safety instructions we boarded 10-person airplane and took off. We were able to see stunning views of Sydney during sundown, the Three Sisters mountain range from above and some rainbows after encountering some rain. Everything takes on a different perspective from the air and you see how big Sydney actually is. Here are a few pictures from the flight.

Cirque en spierpijn

Woensdagavond zijn we naar de Opera House geweest om Cirque du Soleil te zien. Wat een fantastische show! Er waren acrobaten, sterke mannen, een balans act, motorcycles met vuur, opvouwchinesen en een clown natuurlijk. We waren in het grote theater, net groot genoeg voor al die apparaten. Het was een geweldig avond, en we willen onze vrienden bedanken voor zo'n leuk afscheidskado!  

Zondag zijn Jeroen en ik begonnen met sporten na een maand van niets doen op Manly. Jeroen heeft een voetbal club gevonden die in een openbaar park speelt en heeft voor het eerst meegetraind. Er zijn drie teams, hopelijk hebben ze een plek in het tweede en hopelijk is de spierpijn weg voor de volgende training ;) Ik was een tijdje op zoek naar een hardloop groep maar ze waren altijd in de suburbs, erg onhandig zonder een auto. Dus ik heb op de Australische versie van marktplaats een paar mensen gevonden. Zondag hebben we een rondje gedaan in de botanical gardens. Omdat het hier nu eventjes niet uitmaakt of de zon schijnt of niet, was ik verbrand als souvenir. Het voelt goed om weer bezig te zijn!

Verder wordt het nieuws natuurlijk bepaald door de overstromingen in Australie. Gelukkig hebben we hier in Sydney geen enkele last van. Het komt wel dichterbij maar we maken ons geen zorgen. Hier in Sydney is het nu echt zomer, en zelfs Jeroen is overtuigd; hij vindt het eindelijk ok om de airconditioning aan te zetten. Het helpt dat het anders 28 graden binnen is. We hebben weer allerlei leuke dingen in het vooruitzicht, waar we de volgende blog bericht meer over zullen schrijven!

NYE

Happy 2011 everyone!! Ringing in the New Year was indeed a great experience in the Southern hemisphere this year. Friday afternoon it was a sweltering 35 degrees, but we braved the crowds to find a spot close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge to await the fireworks, a show sure to impress. We met a couple of friends in the early afternoon and headed to Circular Quay, an area with a wide boulevard that leads to the opera house. After having our bags checked, we were allowed to go through the gated area, which normally is free to walk through and we found a spot on the walkway and set up camp. It was hot, busy, and the fireworks were still another 10 hours away. The nearby park had already reached capacity and were not allowing any more visitors to enter. We kept ourselves busy with books, food and watching the hordes of tourists trying in futile to reach the Opera House, which was blocked off hours before after reaching capacity. At 9pm them have fireworks for children, and at 12 the big show. It was worth the wait, there were fireworks from the top of highrises, the bridge itself, from Darling Harbour, the whole city was lit up. It was a great show, however we decided that next year we'll get tickets for a venue with a view and leave the sidewalk camping to the other newcomers. 

Kerst BBQ

Zaterdag zijn we gearriveerd op Manly, waar we de volgende twee weken doorbrengen. De harbour bridge over en je voel je echt op vakantie! Dag stad. Dag werk. Hello strand! We hebben een paar mensen uitgenodigd voor kerst bbq. Even een stuk lam op de Beefmaster, een paar cadeautjes, live muziek van Jeroen, en 32 graden natuurlijk. Veel groetjes naar ons familie en vrienden, we hopen dat jullie een fijne kerst hadden!

Mud Run

40km away from Sydney, the 2010 Mud Run was a gathering of 3,000 people to run, wade or crawl through 5km of mud and obstacles to cross the finish line. It was guaranteed to be the most fun you will have with your pants on, so we thought we'd try it out. After 6 hours of torrential rain, there was no shortage of mud! The course went through beautiful native forests of the area and included trails, grasslands, creek crossings, hills and the mud pit at the end! My mom was the designated photographer, she caught us at the end wading through the final mud pit. In the video Jeroen is in the sombrero and below is a team photo.
